Marketing at its core is about connecting your business, product, or service with people. It’s the process of understanding your customers’ needs, creating value for them, and communicating how your product or service meets those needs.

Good marketing should go beyond just pushing out advertising. It should holistically encompass building relationships to develop trust and loyalty with your audience. Marketing is essential for any business, large or small, regardless, if you are a new start-up or a well-established brand.

Effective marketing and a strong strategy can:

Build Awareness: Marketing helps your audience know that your business exists and understand what you offer.
Create Engagement: Open channels for you to have conversations between your business and your audience.
Create Value: Show how your product or service solves a problem or meets your audience’s needs.
Retain Customers: It can keep your customers coming back, discovering new offerings, and building long-term loyalty.

Marketing is in our everyday life and is all around us. It may be a billboard, email newsletter to your inbox, a social media post, television, or newspaper advert. It is good marketing that blends in with you seamlessly, providing you with some value and not feel intrusive.

The marketing tactics come in various forms and can be grouped in the following:

Traditional Marketing: Print items like brochures or flyers, magazines, newspaper, radio or TV adverts.
Digital Marketing: Organic or paid social media ads, Google ads, email newsletters and search engine optimisation or SEO.
Public relations: PR is often used when referring to media releases or an interview with a news broadcaster or newspaper.
Content Marketing: This is mainly about sharing information of value to engage and educate your audience and is not so much about selling or promoting with a specific call to action like this article.
Word-of-mouth Marketing: The tried-and-true method, which is do a great job and people will recommend you to their network, but you are not guaranteed they will or how big their network maybe.

This is only a summarised and grouped list which can be broken down further, but these high level groups are a great place to start with understanding the different types of marketing.

Marketing is important and will assist in your business survival and growth. After all, if no one knows about your business, or they can’t find you, how can they interact with you. It can also help you to stand out in a crowded market and reach the right people at the right time while helping you to scale your business.
It is also worth noting that marketing is not something that is a set and forget item, it should be worked on all year round, tested and refined and of course grow with your business.
